10 Ways to Save Money When Buying Christmas Gifts

Christmas is just around the corner. The weather is getting decently colder, which I love by the way. Our home is already prep for the season. I already did a little bit of Christmas shopping. That's another major thing that we usually do during this season, shop for gifts! Some of us want to do it early, others prefer to do it last minute. Nonetheless, one thing is for sure, a lot of us still want to somehow save money when buying Christmas gifts.

Christmas is not only the time of giving but also the time of debts. Sometimes in our attempt to give nice gifts to our loved ones we ended up buying expensive gifts that we can't even afford thus we borrow money from other people or worse credit card companies. If you have the moolah, well then, go ahead, splurge! But since you are reading this post you probably want to know what you can do to save money when buying Christmas gifts.

I am not saying using a credit card is bad. In fact, I think if you know how to use a credit card properly it can be beneficial to you. You know, rewards and points, all that jazz.  But if you are using your credit card to buy those expensive gifts and you don't have enough money in the bank to back you up, maybe you should sit back and think for a second. Do I really need to buy expensive gifts? What are the things that I can do to still save money when buying Christmas gifts? Now, that's where this post will come in handy. I put together some tips to help you save some money this Christmas season!

I admit I should've posted this entry earlier because some of the tips here should be done before the calendar hit December. But the good news is, Christmas will happen again next year, so any tip that you will get from this post, you can still use next year.

Here are my 10 tips on how to save money when buying Christmas gifts.

Make a list of people you'll need to buy gifts for as early as possible. It will also help if you put budget (and stick to it) or gift ideas opposite the name of the person on your list so that it will be easier for you to shop for gifts.  Better yet, make that list on your 2018 planner or notebook so you can refer to it all year long. I am going to do just that.

I am also going to start a gift fund next year. I am going to set aside budget for gifts every month. I will use it to buy gifts for birthdays and any excess amount will be added to Christmas gift fund next year. Sounds like a good plan. Don't you think?

Shop for gifts early. I've been planning to do this every year for about 3 years now. I always tell myself to shop as early as possible to avoid the Christmas rush and to take advantage of the mall and online sales. But it was only this year that I actually started Christmas shopping as early as October.  I am making progress. I am not done yet. But all I can say is that it feels great that I get to buy presents early. We don't need to spend a chunk of money in buying gifts at once. I also bought some of the items on sale.

Look for online and mall sales.  If you already have a list early and a budget for each person. It will be easier for you to shop online or at the mall during the sale. Just be careful with mall sales though because sometimes it's easy to get sidetracked and instead of buying gifts we instantly feel we need something just because it's sale. I know, I fell into that trap a lot of times.

If you like using credit cards, find out what promotions your credit card companies have for Christmas and take advantage of them. We are using BPI credit card and they have this promotion that for every minimum of Php 3,000 straight purchase, you'll get a Jollibee meal coupon. Free food is always a good idea. Priorities! Priorities!  Sometimes, banks even offer discounts if you use your CC to pay in selected stores.  So make sure you are aware of those.

If you want to shop at Divisoria go ahead. Do it! But I suggest you do it early because the number of people shopping there nearing Christmas is crazy! I used to shop there every year so that I can save money when buying Christmas gifts. However, I do not have the energy anymore. Also, I discovered a new place to shop without leaving the comfort of my home.

Instead of Divisoria, shop at Shopee! If you love Divisoria and you haven't discovered the allure of Shopee yet, well it's time for you to give it a chance. Shopee is like an online Divisoria. There might be a little difference in prices but you can't beat the fact that you get the item by just scrolling your phone rather than commuting/driving, braving the heat and madurukot (pick-pocket) in Divisoria. They also have COD (cash on delivery) which is the only mode of payment I use.

Most of the stuff that you can find in Divisoria, you can find on Shopee. Say for example if you read my previous post about packing for vacation, I bought a set of traveling cubes on Shopee for Php 130 + shipping. My sister went to Divisoria and bought the same set for Php 120. Just a Php 10 difference and you didn't leave the comfort of your home. Even if you add the shipping, you are still paying less. You can also haggle or if you are buying a lot of the same thing, you can even get them at wholesale price.

Just make sure you take time and check customers' review to make sure the items you like are in good condition.  Shopee is my go-to online shop when I am looking for something.  I only had one bad experience so far.

Buy 1 gift for couples or family. I started doing this last year for couples. I try to think of an item that both couples will enjoy instead of buying them individual gifts. Like something for their bed, kitchen or bathroom that they can both use. You can even buy board games, gift checks for groceries or restaurant coupons. Those are some of the ideas I have. I know you can think of something creative. You smart you!

Give edible gifts instead of pricey ones. If you know how to bake, you can bake a big batch of cookies, packaged them nicely and give it to friends or relatives. You can also buy a lot of different kinds of candies and chocolates, distribute them in cute boxes or baskets and you can give them to your little nieces and nephews or your kid's classmates and friends.

Make sure your reward cards are updated and use them when you shop.  Coming from a person who has expired SM advantage card. I don't have the time to update mine because I usually shop with Jarvis and I can't be bothered. So don't be me. Those little points are basically free money once you collected enough!

Take advantage of free gift wrapping station in the mall or just use the paper bag that the presents came with.  So that you will not spend a lot of money on gift wrappers. I know it's a pain to stand in line in gift wrapping sections in the mall especially during this season but if you really want to save money, tiis tiis lang konti bes. However, if you can't be bothered then just use the paper bag the presents come with. Uso naman na din yun ngayon.

At the end of the day, what matters most is that you remembered to give gifts to the people that you care for. What's even better is, you are going to face the new year without debts and a fat bank account!

What do you do to save money when buying Christmas gift? I'm sure each and every one of us has something on our sleeves in terms of saving money this Christmas. I hope you can share them and let me know. Thanks for being here!

  1. I do shop at shopee! I'm waiting for some of my gifts to get delivered to me pa, hehe. I always say "gastos is coming" since it's December and it's true, haha.

  2. I also find Shopee almost as the same price na at Divisoria. Since madami seller, the price is very competitive and its an advantage to us buyers, hehe. I also plan the gifts earlier this year so we're done with our gift list.
